The Shuswap, which is located in the Thompson Okanagan area, is midway between Vancouver and Calgary on the Trans Canada Highway. It is also the junction to points south in the Okanagan. The climate in this region is unique in that it sits in a green oasis surrounded by semi desert to the west and to the south. It’s interesting to note that the grape and wine production has progressed rapidly in points further south in the semi desert region, while historically one of the earliest commercial vineyards in the early 1900’s was in the Shuswap. The region has been recognized as the most northerly grape growing area of the Okanagan or British Columbia for that matter. Cooler grape varieties thrive in this region, a region that does not require irrigation. The other unique advantage of the region is although not a lot cooler, it has more consistent predictable winters in regards to ice wine production, and therefore should instill an advantage over the south. Agriculture tourism is the evolving industry in this region. East west traffic will stop over to view the local offerings as well as detour to the south to take in the larger compliment of vineyards and wineries prior to progressing east. Our region serves as a junction and layover location while exploring locally and further a field.
